Premier League Clubs In Action On Deadline Day

September 2nd, 2010

Sunderland have scooped up Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan on deadline day in a deal worth about 13.5 million pounds.

The centre-forward who joins from French team Rennes, was one of the superstars of the recent World Cup, and was even shortlisted for the Golden Ball Award.

The Black Cats, who sold Kenwyne Jones to Stoke earlier this season, have been targeting Gyan for a long time now, and just hours before the transfer window slammed shut, they finally came to an agreement with his French employers.

Meanwhile, Wigan’s effort to bolster their squad were given a huge boost, as they got in Franco Di Santo from Chelsea for a reported 2 million pounds. Di Santo, who spent almost the whole of last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, had never been a regular at Stamford Bridge, and this move seems to be a step in the right direction for both clubs.

Liverpool 1-0 West Bromwich Albion: Post-Match Review

August 31st, 2010

Fernando Torres scored a fantastic winner in the second half to give Liverpool their first win of the season.

Following a draw and a loss, the Reds were in the relegation zone before this game, and it was upto Roy Hodgson’s men to put in a good performance against a clearly inferior West Brom side.

In the first half, the game was quite cagey, and though Liverpool dominated most of the possession, they hardly had a decent chance. Their only shot on target came in the third minute, when a long-range curler from Torres was caught by Scott Carson in the West Brom goal.

West Brom had a chance or two of their own, the best of them through Marc-Antoine Fortune. The former Celtic loanee, playing his first match since his return from Scotland, tested Pepe Reina with low shot from a tight angle, which the Spanish goalkeeper collected at the second attempt.

Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Arsenal: Post-Match Review

August 30th, 2010

Arsenal came out of Ewood park with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. Andrey Arshavin struck the winner in the second half, after Mame Diuof had cancelled out Theo Walcott’s opener.

Many critics feel that these are the kinds of games which champions need to win, something Arsenal have been unable to do over the last few seasons, but this performance of grit and resilience clearly showed their intent to lift the title they last won in 2004.

It was the home side though, who started the better side and should have taken the lead in the 9th minute. As Sam Allardyce’s men always do, they went Route 1 style, and Ryan Nelsen’s on-target header was cleared off the line by Cesc Fabregas.

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Wigan Athletic: Post-Match Review

August 30th, 2010

In inarguably the shock of the week so far, the Latics stunned their opponents from North London at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Hugo Rodallega’s winners 10 minutes from time gave Roberto Martinez’s men their first points of the season, while Spurs were subjected to their first defeat of the season.

Tottenham started sloppily, and Wigan could have taken inside the first 10 minutes. A Charles N’Zogbia corner was set up for Steve Gohouri by Mario Boselli, but the centre-half’s effort thundered back off the crossbar.

The home side then started to get into the game, and Jermaine Defoe brought the best out of goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, who had replaced Chris Kirkland between the sticks.

Tottenham Hostpur Vs Wigan Athletic Preview 28 August 2010

August 28th, 2010

Wigan Athletic’s bid to get their first points gets harder this week, as they visit White Hart lane on Saturday.

They take on a Tottenham Hotspur who, after their midweek defeat of Young Boys entered the UEFA Champions League, are full of confidence. Harry Redknapp’s men thrashed the team from Switzerland 4-0 to make it through to the group stages 6-3 on aggregate. In the Premier league as well, they have been in decent form, drawing one game, against Manchester City, and beating Stoke City last week.

Wigan, on the other hand, are in free-fall. Their shocking opening day 4-0 loss to Blackpool at home was followed up a by 6-0 thrashing from Chelsea at the DW Stadium. Even though a midweek win in the Carling Cup provided some sort of solace from the Latics, manager Roberto Martinez knows that his job is in utter jeopardy.

And is recent results in this fixture are anything to go, it will get a whole lot worse for Wigan. Last year, they visited North London in confident mood, but after the 90 minutes, their heads were hung in shame. Five goals from Jermaine Defoe subjected them to a 9-1 defeat and Martinez and his team were left absolutely shell-shocked.

Chelsea Vs Stoke City Preview 28 August 2010

August 28th, 2010

Following two defeats in as many games, Tony Pulis and his Stoke side face another uphill of task of visiting Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Potters are one of only three teams still to get on the board, and if they are to open their account at the Bridge, each of their players will have to play out of their skins.

The main reason for this is Chelsea’s current form, which has been impeccable. They are already clear leaders at the top of the league, and have scored 6 goals in each of their two games without reply. In fact, after last week’s thrashing of Wigan, their record in the last 5 Premier League games stands at 29 goals scored and 0 conceded. Yet, Carlo Ancelotti has warned his team against any sort of complacency ahead of this clash with Stoke and has clearly stated that not every game is going to end 6-0 to the champions.

Stoke, on the other hand, lost on the opening day away at Wolves, before being subjected to a 2-1 defeat at home by Tottenham Hotspur. In their second game, they felt hard done by referee Chris Foy, after a late header from Walters was cleared off the line, but television replays show it to have crossed it.

Champions League Group Stage Draws Review

August 28th, 2010

Last night’s draws for the group stage of the 2010-11 season has thrown up some intriguing clashes.

With the possible exception of Tottenham Hotspur, all the English teams have a relatively simple path into the knockout stages, but Harry Redknapp’s side are sure to have their work cut out as they see themselves against holders Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and Dutch champions FC Twente in Group A. But the Spurs fans will not be complaining as they will have some of the best teams around Europe at White Hart Lane in their first appearance in a European competition since 1962.

Manchester United are in Group C, along with Spanish giants Valencia, Scottish champions Rangers and Bursaspor from Turkey. Sir Alex Ferguson’s meeting with the Gers will be an early anticipated one, as they look to emulate their triumph in this competition from 2008.

Meanwhile, Premier League champions Chelsea face what could be a potentially tricky Group F, as they find themselves pitted against Marseille, Spartak Moscow and Slovakia’s FC Zilina. The Blues will surely be favourites to win the group, but away trips to France, Russia and Slovakia will be something Carlo Ancelotti and his team will be wary about.

Blackburn Rovers Vs Arsenal Preview 28 August 2010

August 28th, 2010

Arsenal travel to Ewood Park to take on Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn Rovers in the early kickoff on Saturday.

Blackburn have been outstanding of late at home so far, and were unbeaten against Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal at Ewood Park last year. To be precise, they only lost 3 at home in the whole of the 2009-10 season. Allardyce’s men started their campaign with a 1-0 home win over Everton, before ending up on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline at St. Andrews last Saturday.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have a poor record away from the Emirates, without a win since March outside North London. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet on their last 10 travels.

Arsene Wenger’s men needed all the luck in the world in their first match of the season against Liverpool at Anfield, when a Pepe Reina own goal in the last minute helped them salvage a 1-1 draw. This was followed up though, by a 6-0 thrashing of Blackpool at the Emirates last week, with Theo Walcott scoring a hat trick.
