Man Utd vs Bayern Munich Preview
April 1st, 2010

The year was 1999. The venue was the Nou Camp in Barcelona. The day was May the 26th- one that went down in the history books as the day when the world witnessed one of the most unbelievable Champions League finals ever. English champions Manchester United beat German champions Bayern Munich after one of the most memorable comebacks in the history of football. Alex Ferguson’s men looked to be dead and buried after Mario Basler had given Bayern the lead after just six minutes. The Germans also hit the woodwork twice in the second period-first through Mehmet Scholl and then through Carston Jancker’s spectacular overhead kick. Into extra-time the match went and somehow, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunner Solskjaer scored to cap a remarkable comeback. Ferguson infamously remarked after the game,” Football, bloody hell!”

Eleven years on, it’s Manchester United vs Bayern Munich part two, as the two European giants clash in the quarter-finals of Europe’s biggest club competition.

The first leg will be played on the 30th of March in the Allianz Arena in Germany. Manchester United travel to Munich with one eye on Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash with Chelsea in the Premier League. Sir Alex has received a boost ahead of his side’s trip to the German capital, with top-scorer Wayne Rooney and centre-back Rio Ferdinand both declared fit to play. Both the Englishmen had missed the clash against Bolton last weekend after sustaining injuries, but they will recover in time to face Louis Van Gaal’s men. Sir Alex said after the Bolton game,” Wayne and Rio were just a bit tender. Wayne’s got a bruise on his foot. If he’d played and got a whack on it, then he would have been a doubtful for Tuesday.”

Bayern, on the other hand have suffered a major blow, with the news that Dutch winger Arjen Robben may not be fit to play after the former Chelsea man picked up a calf strain during the German side’s 2-1 defeat against Schalke at the weekend. Robben has been instrumental in his team’s progress to this stage, and they will be sure to miss him.

A Bayern Munich spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We are hopeful he will be able to play but we are not confident.  Our medical department is doing everything they can to get him fit. They have given him an injection and we will see what difference that makes. We hope it will be OK but we are worried.”

Both teams qualified from their round of 16 clashes into contradictory fashion. Manchester United, riding on the back of four goals from Rooney over the two legs, thrashed Italian giants AC Milan 7-2 on aggregate. Bayern, meanwhile, qualified on away goals against Fiorentina after the aggregate score was tied at 4-4. Bayern won 2-1 in Munich, after Ivica Olic scored a controversial winner. In the second leg in Florence, the Italian side was on its way to the last 8 after two Stevan Jovetic strikes had put those 3-1 up. Then, it was Robben who scored one of the best Champions’ League goals ever to put the German side through.

Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer has confessed that his side is scared of facing Rooney. He said,” Rooney is playing better than ever and we at Bayern will fear him when we play United. We have to stop him – but no one has been able to do that very often this season.”

Sir Alex has also said that his side will go on the offensive and will not go to Munich to defend.

Whether Rooney lives up to this hype or not, this one promises to be a classic.
