The memorable 2009-10 England football movement will end this Saturday when unlikely finalists Portsmouth battle Premiership champions Chelsea in the 129th FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. as both clubs stand at the opposite ends of the range in terms of performance (financial and football that is), they will meet in the center as they duke it out for world’s oldest domestic football cup. Expect both clubs to come firing as they try to end the season with a bang.
Chelsea:
It’s secure to say that things are going well at the Stamford Bridge as Chelsea captured their 4th Premiership title in club history with their 8-0 dismantling of Wigan Athletic last weekend. Now they will try to give Carlos Ancelotti a double in his first season and the first for Chelsea since beneath Jose Mourinho in 2005. Chelsea’s aggressive force is like no other in all of Europe and when they are on, wait for to see goals. many goals. They finished the season on a strong note outscoring opponents 17-0 in their final three league matches to bring their season total to an unprecedented 103 goals (United finished in second with 86). 29 of those goals can be credited to this year’s Golden Boot winner Didier Drogba, who won the award by edging out a recent injury ridden Wayne Rooney who finished the season with 26. Drogba has been in superb appearance all season and it will be really exciting to see how he can perform in this year’s World Cup for the Ivory Coast. On a positive note for Chelsea (and England for that matter), skipper John Terry has been deemed fit for the final after tests confirmed that he had not fractured his right foot. However, Branislav Ivanovic is doubtful with a knee injury and is likely to replaced by Paulo Ferreira if he cannot go.
Portsmouth:
To place it nicely, Portsmouth has about the exact opposite kind of season as Chelsea on many fronts. Pompey’s debt and cash flow problems finally boiled over the brim this season as the club was forced to enter into adminstration and consequently suffer a 9 point inference in the Premiership standings, therefore contributing to their demotion to the Championship. Pompey’s financial woes worsened to the point where they were late on paying their players’ on 3 different occasions this season, if not more. One could only assume that would negatively affect player morale and form. However, the team came jointly to put build a amazing run into the FA Cup finals. Despite their valiant efforts, they are facing this year’s league champs and they surely did not fair well against the Blues in league play. Chelsea defeated Pompey 7-1 on collective between their 2 fixtures this season, their most recent being a 5-0 domination at home. Maybe Avram Grant has a few trick left up his sleeve and capture a 2nd FA Cup in 2 years for the Portsmouth true. If he does, a group of anonymous Portsmouth investors have insured that the team will have a roof top bus to rejoice on as they did in 2008. On the injury front, Jamie O’Hara is questionable for the final with a double stress fracture.
Match Facts:
- Chelsea are winning in their last 28 league and cup fixtures with Pompey, winning 21 and drawing 7.
- Portsmouth are the 6th club to ever arrive at the FA Cup final and be demoted in the same season.
- Ashley Cole will be playing in his 7th FA Cup final and will be looking to lift a record 6th medal.
Prediction:
Chelsea 5 – 0 Portsmouth
