Tottenham Hostpur Vs Wigan Athletic Preview 28 August 2010
August 28th, 2010

Wigan Athletic’s bid to get their first points gets harder this week, as they visit White Hart lane on Saturday.

They take on a Tottenham Hotspur who, after their midweek defeat of Young Boys entered the UEFA Champions League, are full of confidence. Harry Redknapp’s men thrashed the team from Switzerland 4-0 to make it through to the group stages 6-3 on aggregate. In the Premier league as well, they have been in decent form, drawing one game, against Manchester City, and beating Stoke City last week.

Wigan, on the other hand, are in free-fall. Their shocking opening day 4-0 loss to Blackpool at home was followed up a by 6-0 thrashing from Chelsea at the DW Stadium. Even though a midweek win in the Carling Cup provided some sort of solace from the Latics, manager Roberto Martinez knows that his job is in utter jeopardy.

And is recent results in this fixture are anything to go, it will get a whole lot worse for Wigan. Last year, they visited North London in confident mood, but after the 90 minutes, their heads were hung in shame. Five goals from Jermaine Defoe subjected them to a 9-1 defeat and Martinez and his team were left absolutely shell-shocked.

Tottenham Hotspur team news:

Goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes misses out after sustaining a groin injury in the midweek game against Young Boys.

Luka Modric, Jamie O’Hara and Jonathan Woodgate are all out, while David Bentley could return.

Wigan Athletic team news:

Victor Moses, who scored in midweek against Harlepool, sustained an ankle injury in the same game, and he misses out.

Captain Gary Caldwell is out with a hip injury but his brother Steven is in line for his Premier League debut with Wigan.

Men to watch out for:

Peter Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur): The lanky forward scored a hat trick in midweek, and being the only striker who is 100% fit, he will look to be amongst the goals once more.

Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur): The Welsh winger has arguably been the best player of the season so far, and over the last few months, he has impressed greatly. He will look to terrorise right-back Ron Stam with his lightning quick breaks down the flank.

Squads:

Tottenham: Cudicini, King, Hutton, Bale, Kaboul, Naughton, Bassong, Dawson, Corluka, Jenas, Assou-Ekotto, Walker, Huddlestone, Rose, Lennon, Palacios, Kranjcar, Dos Santos, Crouch, Defoe, Keane, Pavyluchenko.

Manager: Harry Redknapp

Wigan: Kirkland, Al Habsi, Gohouri, Stam, Boyce, Alcaraz, N’Zogbia, Diame, McArthur, Figueroa, McCarthy, Watson, Thomas, Rodallega, Boselli, Gomez, Golobart, S Caldwell.

Manager: Roberto Martinez

My Prediction:

It is very difficult to see Wigan get anything out of this game, especially with the form they are in. If Spurs are on song, we could be in for another goal-fest.

Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Wigan Athletic
