Premier League Clubs In Action On Deadline Day
September 2nd, 2010

Sunderland have scooped up Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan on deadline day in a deal worth about 13.5 million pounds.

The centre-forward who joins from French team Rennes, was one of the superstars of the recent World Cup, and was even shortlisted for the Golden Ball Award.

The Black Cats, who sold Kenwyne Jones to Stoke earlier this season, have been targeting Gyan for a long time now, and just hours before the transfer window slammed shut, they finally came to an agreement with his French employers.

Meanwhile, Wigan’s effort to bolster their squad were given a huge boost, as they got in Franco Di Santo from Chelsea for a reported 2 million pounds. Di Santo, who spent almost the whole of last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, had never been a regular at Stamford Bridge, and this move seems to be a step in the right direction for both clubs.

Apart from Di Santo, Roberto Martinez has also clinched Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley on a season-long loan.

Birmingham City have confirmed the signing of Jean Beausejour from Club America for an undisclosed fee, while their striker Marcus Bent has been loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Tottenham Hotspur dry spell in the transfer market continued as they failed to bring Liverpool target Ryan Babel to White Hart Lane. His fellow Dutchman though, Rafael Van Der Vaart, who was declared to be on sale by Real Madrid may still be on his way to North London after Harry Redknapp declared that he had agreed a deal for him before the window closed.

Blackpool made new signings, bringing in DJ Campbell and Matt Phillips from Leicester City and Wycombe Wanderers respectively.

But arguably, the most busy club yesterday was Stoke City, who loaned in two players, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jermaine Pennant, whilst signing Marc Wilson from Portsmouth.

Paul Konchesky left Fulham to join his old manager Roy Hodgson at Liverpool, while Mark Hughes was successful in keeping goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer at the club.

Another deal which did not go forward was that of Roque Santa Cruz, after the Paraguayan chose to remain at Manchester City rather than join his old boss Mark Hughes at Fulham. ‘I’m staying and happy to fight for my place’, said Santa Cruz, who has hardly featured under Roberto Mancini.

His strike partner though, Robinho, completed his loan move to AC Milan, where he will join forces with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to make a deadly force up front for the Rossoneri.
